practical exam recipes: ramen, udon
last time we' re ever going to be cooking these 2 dishes ! we were so nervous and also very anxious for time. However, we managed to finish within the designated time slot but was not able to get the bonus marks. (Ms Aisha would award those groups who finished a half hour earliar bonus marks. But I think none of the groups got the bonus marks.. ): oh well.

I thought the exam was quite well done. We practised very good time management and our workplace was very neat and well-organised. We were also very clean and didnt leave any scraps of food lying around our work area.

I think the outcome of both our products look very tempting. They were both well-garnished and tasted great. We used the bowls that were available in the kitchen and it looked marvelous, especially because it was really well-garnished.

I think that we deserve those marks (nicole: 24/30, sarah: 23 half/30) and that Ms Aisha was really kind to give us those kind of marks. (:

now to post the photos taken during our 4th practical.

this is my end product. I think it doesnt really look nice because it looks really hard and dry. I think this can be avoided by putting more water.

this is nicole' s end product. the thing on the spoon is a piece of potato. It looks much more appetizing than last time.

thats me putting black sauce in my bee hoon.

thats me stir-frying my bee hoon.

thats nicole' s macaroni. it looks really nice, soft and cooked.

nicole' s vegetables. she changed from broccoli to cai xin. It' s softer, easier to chew and also cooks faster than broccoli.

nicole' s fish cake. she added it to add to the taste and the colour of the dish.

my vegetables. (spring onion, cabbage and long beans)

my chicken. nicely diced.

my other ngredients (carrots, long beans, garlic and onion) all nicely chopped.

my bee hoon noodles. soaked in cold water.

recipe: bee hoon, macaroni
I think this practical was more or less the same as the second practical. Mainly because my bee hoon turned out the same as that time' s practical and also because it still tasted hard and I couldnt find a solution to make it not so hard.

However, my other ingredients, excluding the noodles tasted nice and cooked. The seasoning also tasted okay. It wasnt too salty or sweet. Just right.
I think the only difference between this practical and the other practical was that I took a much lesser time to prepare my ingredients because then I knew what to do and what to take.

I thought nicole' s recipe was very good. It looked nice and was also very savory. It tasted okay, had the right seasoning and also was cooked long enough.

All in all, I found that I should use the ramen recipe on the final exam instead of this recipe.

I think this modified recipe is better than the last one because the soup tasted better with or it suited the dish better than the tom yam soup. the tom yam soup was edible but it wasnt very nice with the udon noodles.

Although the seaweed looked messy in the final outcome of the product, it made the dish taste very nice and also made it more Japanese-like.

The carrots also tasted better because we cut them into smaller pieces and also boiled it over a longer time. However, our problem was that, we had too many carrots. But in order to not waste ingredients, we still added them in our dish but the outcome became too orange so we covered it with the noodles.

Compared to the previous recipe, the appearance of the outcome of my product looked nicer because I garnished it with spring onion and parsley.

I thought sarah' s ramen looked nice as it did not have a lot of seaweed and also did not appear over-garnished. Her noodles also looked very delicious.

overall, I found this modified recipe better than the first one and that we should use this recipe as our final one.

these are the photos we took from our 3rd practical ! (:

the end product of both our recipes. I think it looks very messy. because there were too many pieces of seaweed. and that they were too big. other than that, I thought they look very palatable.

thats the end product of nicole' s udon. I think it looks very colourful. mainly because of the spring onion and parsley in the middle and it makes it look very nice. (:

thats my end product. I think it looks very nice and it tasted nice too. I think this end product was nicer both in appearance and taste than the first time.

this is nicole stirring her noodles and ingredients. I think she stirs it really well and that all the ingredients are properly cooked and taste nice.

thats my noodles boiling.

thats nicole putting her carrots in her noodles. I think maybe we cut too much carrots. oh well, its healthy. (:

nicole stirring her noodles in her soup.

nicole' s soup boiling. she stirs it to prevent it from sticking to the pot.

our ingredients. (diced chicken, cut carrots, spring onion, parsley and seaweed)

thats me stirring my noodles while its boiling.

thats me stirring my noodles. I constantly have to stir it so it doesnt stick to the pot.

our boiled noodles. we rinsed it in cold water and left it out to cool.

our ingredients. (nicole' s mushroom potage, diced chicken, chopped carrots, spring onions, parsley and seaweed)

yay !! 3rd practical !
today we were supposed to prepare our first modified recipe or modify our first recipe. which was, in our case, ramen and udon.

Because I was quite satisfied with my recipe, I didnt really make a lot of big changes, except just boiling the carrots longer and also adding garnish, which was seaweed. Also, I didnt use can soup this time, but chicken stock.

nicole changed her soup also, from tom yam to mushroom potage. She thinks the mushroom potage tasted nicer than the tom yam. she also added seaweed as garnish so both our recipes looked nicer in appearance.

I think this modified version of our recipes was better than the first time we tried cooking it because then we didnt really know what to do but now I find that we are more familiar with the recipe and we know the procedure better.

overall, I think these 2 recipes are better than the other 2 and I feel that we should really consider these 2 recipes over the other 2 as our final choice because of both the appearance and the taste.

I chose the macaroni recipe because it was easier to eat and cook and easy to prepare. Although it requires a lot of time to boil the vegetables and the macaroni, I managed to finish within the designated time and the end product was quite okay and tasty.

I thought the macaroni was not as good as the udon recipe. However, I just wanted to try this particular recipe out because according to the survey results, the second most popular choice was western food. I got the inspiration for this recipe from my father, who suggested that I use this recipe because it was a dish that is easier to prepare than other western dishes.

I thought sarah' s bee hoon was nice, especially the chicken and the vegetables. However, the noodles was quite hard so I suggest that she cook it for a longer period of time.

I think improvements can be made to my dish like, peeling the skin off the potatoes before putting them into the noodles.
other than that, I thought it was really nice and tasty.

these are the photos taken during our second practical (:

thats me. I think I was stirring my macaroni thats why my face is like that. apparently I didn' t know my picture was being taken..

thats sarah' s hard bee hoon. I tasted it. Although the noodles were uncooked, the chicken and the vegetables was nice.

thats both of us with sarah' s bee hoon. I was handing her the salt. this picture was taken by venus.

last picture of sarah' s bee hoon.
we didnt take alot of pictures mainly because we were both busy with our individual recipes and that both of us needed to prepare our ingredients.
although we didnt take photos of my recipe, there are photos of it in the 4th practical.

yay ! our second practical ! (:
that day we had to choose another 2 recipes. so our chosen recipes were: bee hoon, macaroni.

I chose bee hoon mainly because its quite easy to cook and does not require that much preperation. Although it needed more ingredients than the other recipe, ramen, I think it was quite okay as it did not take very long to prepare the ingredients (dicing the chicken and the garlic, cutting the onion etc.)

nicole chose the macaroni as her second recipe because it was very easy to cook, easy to chew and macaroni is her favourite dish. (:

compared to the ramen recipe, I think the ramen one was better than the bee hoon recipe because the ramen one looked more appetizing and was tastier. the bee hoon was kind of uncooked and was hard. I think this can be avoided, i just have to soak the noodles in cold water longer.

I think it can improved more and that the other recipe was better so I should consider the ramen recipe over the bee hoon recipe.

I thought it was very fun because we cooked Japanese food for the first time. Although we didn' t really know what we were doing because we were inexperienced, I thought the outcome was quite okay and also quite tasty.

I thought my dish was very colourful because of the variety of ingredients and also the vegetables. The many ingredients also added flavour to the dish .
However, the carrots turned out to be quite tough and hard to chew. I think this can be avoided in future by cutting them into a smaller size and also boiling them for a longer period of time.

I think both our end products look quite appetizing and are tasty. Even though we have not tried cooking Japanese food before, I think that it was a very good attempt.
